Footprints of Buddha

Hey Friends,

For my World Religions class at Perkins School of Theology we are required to make blog posts on our thoughts from class and reflections from some movies. Seeing as how I have made a commitment to blog here regularly I figure I would post my thoughts here. Then I am going to link to this post on Blackboard, hopefully this method of contributing my thoughts will be sufficient to my professor.

The Video - Footprints of Buddha

My reflections:
There is something peaceful about Buddhist monks. I cannot quite describe it, but if I had to I would call it a wisdom about life. A wisdom that is applicable to life well beyond that of someone who is Buddhist. From the articulation and explanation of the faith in the video I believe that my observation would be accepted by these monks.

There were two quotes from the video that I found to be particularly striking. The first is in regard to a young boy who has just began the process of becoming a monk and the natural occurrence that we can become a bit too self confident, which happens a lot during life I find.
"If he gets above himself we shall help him down."
I would hope this type of accountability is not exclusive to a monastery, in fact I am quite confident that it is not, on account that I have many friends who are a little too willing to help me down when I get above myself.

The second quote that resounded the most with me was:
"A man who does not love himself will never love others. It is Impossible."
This strikes me because of how true I have found it to be without ever having been able to articulate it in such specificity. I have seen in my life people battling themselves, hating themselves, and the effect that that has on the others in their life is certainly not one of love. I have been going through a process of self discovery and growth recently and I am finding it true that the more I come to understand who I am as a unique individual and learning to love myself the more that love just naturally overflows to the others in my life. I am a strong advocate of finding out who you are as quickly as possible (I even wrote about it recently Here).
