Sometimes You Just Have to Catch the Frisbee

A man on the phone stands on the sidewalk deep into a frustrating conversation as the perfectly thrown Frisbee falls directly past his left hand.

This was the scene that I witnessed last week outside at Perkins.

What is the conversation about?

This is a seminary, sometimes people are dealing with very serious things over the phone. One of the primary things we seek to do in life is to be present in the moment in order to enjoy life. We try really hard to pursue happiness and in ministry we hope that we can help people find Joy in living out what God created them to be.

Of course there has to be that element of God, but what if we miss out on Joy in the name of pursuing it?

It was a beautiful day outside, upper 60's sunshine and green grass. A group of young students are playing with a Frisbee and the flight of the disc leads one student nearby the man on the phone.

The man on the phone remains deep in conversation.

The student that was led toward the man picks up the Frisbee and gestures to the man in a way that invites him to join in playing. He then trows the disc near perfectly to the man and it nearly hits him gently in the hand hanging down to the side but falls to the ground.

The man on the phone remains in deep in conversation.

The student then gestures to the man again inviting him to join in playing. This time suggesting for him to pic it up and throw it.

The man on the phone ignores him.

You see, it is entirely possible to maintain a phone conversation and catch a Frisbee thrown directly to you. It is certainly possible to join the game.

At this point the student picks up the disc and launches it a great distance back to his friends an walks away.

The lesson we can learn from this is simple. Sometimes you just have to catch the Frisbee.

We are often invited to be present, and to enjoy the beauty and fun in the people around us.

Don't miss out on joy in the name of pursing it.

Pick it up the Frisbee, join the game of life.

Throw it!
